BATON ROUGE- The deadline for Louisiana residents to file their 2010 state income tax returns is Monday.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue says the filing date is normally by May 15, but that date falls on a Sunday this year. So the deadline has been extended to the next business day, May 16.
Individual income tax returns must be filed by Monday to avoid penalties. Returns filed after Monday are subject to late payment and interest penalties if the taxpayer owes a balance.
Monday is also the deadline to request an extension. An extension to file is not, however, an extension to pay. If a balance is owed and it's received late, the filer is still subject to late payment and interest penalties if the balance is received late.
