Days before school, fire burns school building

HAMMOND- School leaders in Tangipahoa Parish are trying to figure out how to handle the start of school at Hammond Eastside Elementary School after a fire there Wednesday morning.

Witnesses shared a picture of the inferno with news partner ActionNews17.com. It showed a glowing fire inside the school and billowing smoke.

Fire Chief John Thomas said the fire did not damage classrooms and no one was injured.

Superintendent Mark Kolwe said his staff is assessing the damage.

School starts Monday.
