The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says parts of the Barataria Bay estuary will be closed to crabbing for 10 days beginning Feb. 27 to remove derelict crab traps.

The closure covers parts of Lafourche, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes, from 6 a.m. Feb. 27 through 6 a.m. March 8.

All crab traps in the closed area during that time will be considered abandoned, and removed.

Anyone can remove the traps, but nobody can keep them.

They must be taken to a disposal site at Sea-Way Marina in Lafitte.

Volunteers have removed and disposed of 17,972 abandoned and derelict traps since 2004.
