According to a release from the city, damage to the plant is worse than initially thought. The new timetable for power restoration is late Wednesday afternoon.

Workers are bringing in a new transformer to replace one destroyed in the fire. Authorities say the biggest problem they have right now is heavy traffic around the plant from people trying to see the damage.

St. Mary Parish has opened heat relief shelters for Morgan City residents and special needs citizens.

A substation at the Joseph Cefalu Steam Plant caught fire after an explosion last night. Morgan City Police tell News 2 the plant was evacuated safely and there were no injuries.
