BATON ROUGE - Carl Dabadie has officially taken over control of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

He was sworn in during a ceremony in the Metro Council chambers.  The 26 year veteran of the department has served as a motorcycle officer, training center director and department chief of staff during his career.

Dabadie was named interim chief after Dewayne White was fired earlier this month.  That move led to a lawsuit while White fights job performance allegations made by Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden.

Holden says Dabadie will be a front-runner for the job if the department shows improvement during the interim period.  Mayor Holden says the application process will be open, but he says only his staff will be involved in selecting the next permanent chief.

A civic group was organized to narrow the field in 2011 when White was selected.
