BATON ROUGE – A curfew is being put in place in Baton Rouge as authorities respond to reports of looting.

Multiple arrests were made Monday and authorities were fielding calls Tuesday about businesses being looted.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office says the curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

At least 40,000 homes have been damaged and 10 people killed in some of the worst flooding in Louisiana history, touched off by as much as 2 feet of rain in 48 hours. Over 30,000 people have been rescued since Friday, with more being brought to safety by the hour.

In a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon, State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson said that one of the reasons Gov. Edwards signed the executive order to establish the curfew for East Baton Rouge residents is to combat looting.

According to East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, four people were arrested for looting at a Dollar General. Additionally the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office reported 8 looting arrests thus far.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard extended the curfew in that parish until Wednesday morning. Only essential personnel will be allowed on Livingston roadways. 

All Livingston Parish waterways will remain closed until further notice in conjunction with Ascension Parish. 

Edmonson added that the curfew is in place to make it easier for law enforcement and first responders to move about the area freely. Edmonson warned those traveling that they would be subjected to being stopped and searched if out after the curfew.

The City of Zachary has issued a curfew from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. until Sunday, Aug. 21.
