BATON ROUGE- The traditional King Cake is essential to make any Mardi Gras party authentic, but not everyone has easy access to the sweet treats. It's why several bakeries are shipping the cakes cross country.

"Probably doing about 20,000 to 25,000 king cakes total and a little bit less than half of that are being shipped all over the country, all the way from Alaska to New York city," said Felix Sherman of Ambrosia Bakery.

While the bill to ship king cakes can get high, it's something folks around town are willing to pay.

"We usually send it either ground, if it's within one or two days or air service. It can get kind of expensive, but its worth it though, people enjoy their king cakes," said mailbag employee Michael Cunningham.

Many bakeries say the last day to ship a cake before Mardi Gras is Monday.
