BATON ROUGE - A Metro Councilwoman is trying to tackle the future of a dreary Baton Rouge development.

Since the flood of August 2016, the residents in the Elm Grove Garden Apartments have seen the options for places to live decline, while seeing an increase in rent and crime. District 2 Councilwoman Chauna Banks is holding a meeting Monday night to find other properties and options for residents. 

Rising rent and utilities aren't the only concerns for Banks. Many of the units are boarded up and look abandoned.  Currently, there are 50 to 60 units in the complex that are occupied. Banks said the apartment has "insufficient living conditions."

Since the flood, Banks says rental properties are few and far between, and some property owners don't participate in the voucher program. She has invited representatives from the Department of Housing and Urban Development's voucher program, Louisiana Housing Corporation, Office of Community Development, and EBR Housing Authority to the meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Beech Grove Baptist Church on Elm Grove Garden Drive.
