BATON ROUGE - A coupon site may be taking your money and creating problems for local business owners.
Bigtip.com is a national coupon site based out of Seattle, Wash. They charge people a subscription fee to receive coupons for local restaurants and stores in Baton Rouge, including Mellow Mushroom, Varsity Sports and Mestizo.
The only problem: store owners told News 2 they never gave consent to run the coupon.
"I definitely think it's a scam," said Varsity Sports Manager Kristen Manske. "They're charging for coupons, which I don't think is good. Then the people who's coupons are on the site are not aware that there's a coupon out there."
The site offers a one-week trial period, but asks for your credit card information up front. Bigtip.com also holds a 100% guarantee or your money back.
News 2 called the owner of Bigtip.com for more information. The man who answered admitted to owning the site, but would not reveal any information about how it's run.
"It's shocking, and also concerning," said Mellow Mushroom Owner David Bruno. "I don't want customers to come in, bring coupons that they've paid for and we're not able to honor them."
Bigtip.com failed an evaluation given by the Better Business Bureau, which cited issues with advertising and sales. The BBB asks anyone who has purchased a coupon from Bigtip.com to file a complaint.
