BATON ROUGE - A Baton Rouge couple faces possible prison time for a scheme that federal prosecutors say defrauded Medicare of $470,386 through bogus billings for power wheelchairs and other medical equipment neither requested nor needed by beneficiaries.

Young Anyanwu pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of health care fraud, one count of conspiracy to pay or receive bribes or kickbacks and one count of paying a bribe or kickback. Those charges carry combined penalties that could total 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines.

Beatrice Anyanwu pleaded guilty to one count of health care fraud and one count of paying an illegal bribe or kickback. The combined maximum penalties for those charges total 15 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.
