Couple married for 50 years, roots for LSU & Alabama
GONZALES - A couple married for 50 years has learned to accept their differences, even when it comes to college football.
While Eddie Mendel roots for the Tigers, his wife Cathy is a hardcore Crimson Tide fan.
"Between Alabama and LSU, that's the only thing we've ever really disagreed on," said Cathy Mendel.
Their bedroom is a true reflection of unconditional love. Two blankets, one purple and gold, the other, crimson and white, neatly divide their bed. On top sits a stuffed tiger and a stuffed elephant, staring at one another.
It's all in good fun, but gameday is serious business.
"If I lose I got to take her out to eat at Sammy's and I got to pay for it," said Eddie Mendel.
Though their family and friends give them a hard time, the couple says this friendly competition has brought them closer together.
"We both are picky people," said Cathy, "which means I pick on him and he picks on me and I really think that's whats made our marriage last so long."
