Couple in custody over teen weighing 40 pounds
ANDERSON, IN - Police have taken into custody the wife of a man who was arrested after his mentally disabled 15-year-old granddaughter was taken to an Indianapolis hospital weighing less than 40 pounds.
Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur says the girl is in critical, life-threatening condition.
Authorities jailed the 58-year-old grandfather Monday on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent. His 54-year-old wife was in custody Tuesday and Sandefur says she will face a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent and battery.
Sandefur says no court hearings have been scheduled. He says both are being held for 72 hours while the investigation continues, and didn't know if they had an attorney.
Sandefur says a 4-year-old living in the house has been turned over to the Indiana Department of Child Services.
