Couple charged with defrauding Medicaid
BAKER - The state attorney general says a Baker couple has been arrested on charges of allegedly conspiring to defraud the state's Medicaid program of more than $400,000.
Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says 41-year-old Shonda Augustus was arrested Feb. 4 and her husband, 36-year-old Melvin Williams, was arrested Tuesday.
Investigators said Thursday that Augustus was providing room and board to five Medicaid recipients in a group home setting and was given power of attorney for each between 2010 and 2015, in violation of the Louisiana Medicaid program. State prosecutors charge Augustus got fraudulent payments from the Medicaid program totaling $449,226.
Investigators allege the recipients received care from other Medicaid providers and that Augustus housed a Medicaid recipient with mental instabilities and that Augustus had tied up the recipient and hit her.
