Councilman: police department budget essentially $0
SORRENTO- The town council voted to defund the embattled police department and give voters the chance to shut the department down for good this fall.
Tuesday, four council members voted for the moves and were met with resistance from one. Beginning August 1st, there will be no money for typical, day-to-day operations of the department.
Money that would have been spent on the force will pay for drainage work and to pay the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office to patrol the town.
An election where voters will decide if they want to eliminate the department and the police chief's position will be held in November.
