GONZALES- A city councilman will have to pay a fine or spend a limited amount of time after he was found guilty in connection with a theft of electricity case.

Timothy Vessel was accused of using his neighbor's utilities to power his property while rebuilding from a fire. In January, he was cited after running an extension cord from a vacant trailer to his house next door without permission.

The case against him began shortly after he was sworn into office.

But Wednesday, a judge ruled Vessel didn't steal the power, he only attempted to.

The verdict comes with a $100 fine or 30 days in jail.
