BATON ROUGE - The Jewel J. Newman Community Center has served the Scotlandville area for years, but according to Metro Council member Chauna Banks- Daniel the center isn't what it use to be.

"This is a situation where there have been no accountability for the Jewel J. Newman Community Center," said Daniel.

Since the center is in her district, she oversees operations. To help turn things around she said she sent center director Carl Slaughter a list of 16 recommendations, such as vacating certain rooms in the center and removing all photos in the gym lobby to present a clean appearance.

"Since June 1st, I began to implement small changes working with the current staff which has over 60 years of community center experience and I've basically been met with nothing but opposition."

But Daniel says Slaughter isn't taking directions.

"We have a situation where someone is throwing a temper tantrum because they cannot get their way any longer and don't want to submit to my authority," she said.

News 2 got a copy of a letter filed by Daniel recommending Slaughter's suspension, listing several things Daniel told him to fix but never did.

Jill Craft is Slaughter's attorney. She says her client has complied with every request given by Daniel and says this is a case of micromanagement.

"It's like trying to set someone up to fail or trying to create a paper trail that's just false," Craft said. "You can't tell me that in 35 years of city-parish employment all of a sudden Carl Slaughter's become a terrible employee. That's not accurate."

According to Jill Craft, the pre-suspension notice filed by council woman Daniel was thrown out and the matter was moved to a later date for discussion.

Daniel says it's not her intent to get rid of Slaughter.
