BATON ROUGE - The East Baton Rouge Metro Council's Finance and Executive Committee has recommended that the full council settle with a former elementary school employee who sued the city-parish seven years ago over toxic-mold issues at the school.

Richard Brown, a former custodian at LaBelle Aire Elementary School, said in the lawsuit that the city-parish knew about the mold for months but did nothing about it.

The city-parish's Head Start program leases space at LaBelle Air Elementary.

Brown filed the lawsuit in 2005 and said the city-parish was aware of the mold in August 2004.

An attorney for Brown, Chris Alexander, has said Brown suffers from fatigue and respiratory problems from cleaning the mold.

The committee recommended authorizing the settlement, worth more than $73,000.
