Council: Scam crews claim FEMA requires sandbags
HOUMA- The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government says private work crews in the Gibson area have been telling elderly residents they have to sandbag their homes to get federal disaster relief.
A statement on the government's website says that's false, and people should call the sheriff's office if they're approached by someone making that claim and asking for money to put up sandbags.
Councilwoman Arlanda Williams, who represents the area, tells a Houma newspaper that the scam is appalling at a time when everyone should be working together.
