BATON ROUGE - The metro council approved a rezoning request, paving the way for bar developers to build a new establishment in the Mid City area.

Wednesday, the council voted unanimously to rezone land at the corner of Government Street and Steele Boulevard. The land is currently empty.

The owners of Radio Bar, a Mid City bar four blocks away, are developing the site. They said it will be a beer garden.

Early in the planning phase, there was some opposition. Now, though, most has subsided.

"I think [this] is exactly what this neighborhood and this part of town needs; people who are willing to invest their money and effort into developing this in a way and a manner that is conducive to the style of life here," Barrington Neil, a resident near where the beer garden is planned, said.

There was no information immediately available about when construction will start.
