Corps: Worst of river flooding in Louisiana over
MORGAN CITY - The Army Corps of Engineers says the worst of Louisiana's flooding is over, allowing the agency to remove an emergency operations center set up in Morgan City.
Since April, Morgan City has been at the center of successful efforts to keep waters out of this river city and surrounding parishes.
Still, Col. Ed Fleming, the district commander in New Orleans, said Wednesday at a news conference that a lot of work remains. The corps is busy keeping the Mississippi River open for ships and repairing damage to levees.
Fleming says a complete picture of the damage will come once floodwaters recede and engineers can assess levees.
He says bad flooding along the Missouri River should not be a problem for Louisiana.
