Corps to close bays at Bonnet Carre Spillway
NEW ORLEANS- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it will begin closing bays at the Bonnet Carre Spillway on Saturday.
The corps says initially it will close 30 of the 330 bays currently open based on the reduced flows in the Mississippi River at Red River Landing. Officials say because the river has receded below the maximum flow there, the diversion of water into Lake Pontchartrain is no longer needed to safely pass the river flow through the New Orleans area.
Operations were to begin at 7 a.m.
The corps plans to continue assessing the river's conditions before deciding whether more closures will occur.
