Cool Schools: Lewis Vincent Elementary
DENHAM SPRINGS - A volunteer at Lewis Vincent Elementary in Denham Springs is opening the eyes of her third graders In more ways than one.
Mary Haupt is blind, but she doesn't let that slow her down. She says teaching is what she was born to do and credits a childhood friend with helping her follow her dream.
"I had her in here starting a year and a half ago, and she would just come periodically," says 3rd grade teacher Lauren McGowan. "no she comes twice a week, all day, to help me and any other class that may need her."
"At first I wanted to teach blind children," Haupt told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "Now I'm so happy I get to teach sighted children about blind people. There are so many people in the world that don't know much about blind people, and I'm trying to bridge the gap."
Mary helps children who need more attention in a specific subject.
"She helps us spell...do math...and do multiplication," 3rd grader Bryce Nobel says.
His classmate Bailey Carslon agrees.
"She helps us solve problems with friends, and I think that's a really good feeling," she boasted.
McGowan says the impact Mary has goes beyond anything she can teach.
"Seeing Mary in action enriches their lives by looking at people with all sorts of disabilities in a different manner," she explains. "We have her work with our special education students as well, and they are encouraged by what she can do. We all have individual strengths and weaknesses, and seeing Mary gives them a lot of courage and hope for their future."
