BATON ROUGE- Que’asia Stafford was very young when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the gulf coast. Now, ten years later, she’s using the experience as motivation for the upcoming International Science Fair in Brazil.

“It’s kind of a project to help the coast because every day it’s wasting away and one day it may get to the point that it’s all gone,” Que’asia told News 2’s Kylie Dixon. “If a title wave comes in, it might be under water one day and we don’t want that happen, so we are trying to use waste material to make a structure that’s strong enough, that if put under water, it can help the wetlands from wasting away.”

Que’asia is a 7th grader at Kenilworth Science and Technology School. Her project, “Smart Coastal Protection,” earned her a spot at this year’s International Science Fair.

“I would say her strongest point would be perseverance,” says her teacher, Elkhan Akhundov. “She is very persistent and passionate about what she is doing.”

At the end of October, Que’asia will be competing against 376 other students for the science fair’s top prize.

We salute you Que’asia, for making your school really cool.
