BATON ROUGE - 2une In began a new series this year called 'Cool Schools'. We've been featuring a different school with a unique teacher, student or organization every week. This week we looked back at some of the Cool Middle Schools in our area.

One of our favorites: 86-year-old Rita Rangel, who works as a translator for Spanish-speaking students at Westdale Middle School.

"She's here Monday through Thursday and helps the class for 90 minutes each day," teacher Linda Ravalais explains. "It's just amazing how much these children have grown and what they've learning in that short of a time."

As for Rangel, she doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon and says she'll work as long as she's able.

"As long as I'm standing every morning when I get up, I say 'thank you Lord," she told 2une In's Kylie Dixon.

We also visited Livingston Parish where we caught up with Live Oak Middle School 8th grader Brayden Vallot who wants to eliminate bullying at his school. He took the lead in staying an anti-bullying week to remind his classmates of the harm bullying can cause.

"He will give you his views, but he's also a really smart young man," boasts Principal Ryan Hodges. "His parents brought him up the right way and it shows".

We also dropped by Spanish Lake Primary School in Ascension Parish, where preteens are learning to play the ukelele. Their music teacher says it's more than just teaching them a skill: It also helps with memory and confidence.

"They are in the classroom all day reading, writing, math, and they get to come do something different," teacher Chad LeBlanc opines. "It's an hour long session that's separate than what they do the rest of the day."

If you're interested in having your school in the spotlight, E-mail 2une In's Kylie Dixon at kdixon@wbrz.com or give her a call at (225) 336-2392. Also, be sure to 2une In next week when we review the coolest high schools in our area.
