Cool School: kindergarteners learn Mandarin
BATON ROUGE - Kindergarteners at Polk Elementary in Baton Rouge are not just learning how to count. Lessons go a step further, learning the numbers in mandarin.
Teacher Min Zhang instructs the first and only class of mandarin Chinese for students in Baton Rouge.
Principal Cheryl Matthews is proud of her budding linguists.
"It's a great opportunity for our children to begin move through our language emerging program and will help them gain access to the global community. And Mandarin seems to be the language of the global economics world wide and so there will be many opportunities as adults"
The class is part of a special program "FLAIM." The acronym stands for foreign language academic immersion magnet.
For these students, the day starts off in english and after lunch they learn math, science and social studies all in mandarin.
