Convicted killer Gerald Bordelon was put to death by lethal injection just after 6 p.m. at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.
He is among the first inmates at Angola to waive his right to appeal his death sentence.
Bordelon raped and killed his 12-year-old stepdaughter Courtney LeBlanc back in 2002. Before that, Bordelon served about 20 years behind bars for other sex crimes.
News 2's Chris Nakamoto was a statewide media witness.
Here is a re-cap of the events as he witnessed it from the death chamber:
At 6p.m. sharp, Bordelon walked into the death chamber and told family members he was incredibly sorry for what he did. He pleaded for forgiveness.
"I'm sorry. It should have never happened, but it did," Bordelon said. "I know it won't bring closure, but I hope you can forgive me. I would also like to apologize to my family and tell them I love them."
When asked by prison leaders if he had anything else to say, Bodelon said, "That's all."
He was then escorted to the gurney where eight prison officials strapped him in. The curtains closed.
When they re-opened, three intravenous lines were hooked up to him. Warden Burl Cain nodded his head and a lethal cocktail of three drugs flowed through Bordelon's body.
He let out a snort and a deep breath. Seconds later, he took his last breath around 6:18p.m. However, the prison's coroner and doctor didn't pronounce him dead until 6:32 p.m.
Family members of Courtney LeBlanc were seen wearing blue ribbons and pictures of Courtney. They were crying as they witnessed the execution.
Bordelon's attorney, Jill Craft, told reporters there were other crimes Bordelon committed but wasn't at liberty to discuss them. But, she did say he wanted to die to take responsibility for his actions.
Earlier in the day, Bordelon exchanged crosses with his daughter. She gave him a gold one which he wore and will be buried in. He gave her one he made from the prison.
Family members had no comment after the execution.
Bordelon's last meal consisted of a peanut butter and apple jelly sandwich, fried fish and chocolate chip cookies.
