Construction on roundabouts starts Monday
HAMMOND - Construction begins along a busy artery connecting the two cities in southern Tangipahoa Parish next week.
Monday, work begins on a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 51 and Club Deluxe Road. Traffic will remain flowing through the work area, except for 15 days in mid-April when Club Deluxe will be closed. Detour routes will be posted and early warning will be given, the state said when it announced the project Thursday.
After the first roundabout is finished, two more will be built at the I-12 ramps with Highway 51.
The roundabout at Club Deluxe could be completed as early as June. The two other roundabouts could be completed as early as April 2016.
According to engineers, traffic circles - or roundabouts- can increase traffic capacity by 30 percent to 50 percent compared to traditional intersections and the design feature is also believed to decrease the number of wrecks at an intersection.
Following the roundabout construction, the road will be repaired between each roundabout. The entire project is slated to be finished by July 2016.
The project will likely cause serious traffic congestion.
