PRAIRIEVILLE - As students prepare to go back to school tomorrow, construction crews are scrambling to prepare the campus for nearly 900 new people at Prairieville Middle School.

The school is undergoing a $15-million dollar renovation, including a new cafeteria and new classroom building. The cafeteria is completed, but the classrooms need more time.

"Our numbers have been increasing over the years and finally we have enough space to accommodate each lunch shift," said Dina Davis, the principal at the school.

The school is decades old and the building shows its age, one reason why teachers are excited to see some changes.

"You see the bars and you see the barbed wire, it's kind of a little depressing to be quite honest, we're a joke sometimes because we have bars and barbed wires that was built in the 1950s," said Sandi Gautreau, a math teacher at the school.

Now teachers are excited students will finally have a building that's more representative of the success happening in the classrooms.

"It's like Christmas morning when you get that new toy and our kids are going to experience the new, and we've always had panther pride, and now our panther pride is going to be shown through our buildings," said Gautreau.

The new classroom building is expected to be completed sometime next year.
