Concert crowds expected to overflow downtown BR

BATON ROUGE - The River Center is anticipating its largest crowd in history this weekend, which could also mean historic traffic downtown. 

Friday's Elton John and Anthony Hamilton concerts will bring an estimated 13,000 people to the Baton Rouge venue.

Hamilton's concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Theatre of Performing Arts, and Elton John starts at 8 p.m. in the River Center Arena. Both concerts are sold out.

In addition to the concerts, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity District Conference is ongoing at the River Center Exhibition Hall and River View Room on throughout the day and into the evening.

The River Center admits "traffic and parking will be challenging".

Baton Rouge Police will help with traffic flow and crowd control downtown, but no more than usual, said Corporal L'Jean McKneely.

McKneely said four to five uniform officers will assist with at the River Center's parking garage and bicycle cops will be downtown along with regular patrols.

The River Center is holding a Pre-Concert Part at 5:30 p.m. to help with congestion and advises concert-goers to take alternate ways downtown including Convention Street, Florida Boulevard, Highland Road and River Road.

Also, CATS Capitol Park Trolley Service will run from 5 p.m. to midnight.
