BATON ROUGE - Questions are being raised after a fight at an East Baton Rouge Parish high school sent a teacher to the hospital Monday.

Most of the concerns lie with a lack of a policy dictating what teachers should do in the event of a fight between students. On Monday, one of those teacher was knocked out and hospitalized after he tried to intervene in a fight at Tara High School.

He's not the first to try and break up a fight between students at an area school.

Two years ago, Scotlandville High Principal Calvin Nichols was fired after he broke up a fight using a stick. Since then, a judge has overturned his termination.

"There's no training given by the school system whatsoever to any of the educators on how to break up fights, how to deal with fights," said Jill Craft, Nichols' attorney.

WBRZ shared those concerns with EBR School Superintendent Warren Drake and asked him what teachers should do in that situation.

"When an event like that happens, we just ask them to take precautions, but we're not looking for an event like that. I think what's really important is that we're making a good educational opportunity for our kids," Drake said.

Drake clarified that the school system does not have a clear policy that defines what teachers should do in the event of a fight. A notion which worries Craft.

"I mean, I'm not trained in kung-fu. I know the teachers here are not trained in hand-to-hand combat nor should they be, their job is to educate."
