BATON ROUGE - Community leaders in Baton Rouge told News 2 today the seeds of trust planted by fired police chief Dewayne White will keep growing.

Rev. Isaiah J. Webster with the Greater New Guide Baptist Church said he was shocked to hear about White's firing Wednesday. Webster spent some time working with White to improve relations between the community and the police department.

"I was concerned," he told News 2 today. "Not a lot of explanations as to why the decision was made. I think he was trying to do work that would benefit us, especially in our area."

Pastors and other community leaders presented White with an award recently for strengthening community relations, specifically through the BRAVE initiative which focused patrols in ZIP codes with higher violent crime rates.

"I feel the police officers in the area need to meet the people in the area and develop some kind of trust and I feel like that was being fixed," Webster said.

A meeting for White to appeal his termination is scheduled for Feb. 18.
