Commercial fishing for large coastal sharks closed
BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has closed commercial fishing for large coastal sharks in Louisiana waters.
The National Marine Fisheries Service closed commercial fishing for those sharks in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week. The season will remain closed in state and federal waters until Jan. 1.
During the closed season, all commercial harvest, possession, purchase, exchange, barter, trade, sale or attempt to purchase, exchange, barter, trade or sell large coastal sharks or their fins is prohibited.
Sharks taken for research and the commercial harvest of small coastal sharks come under two other permits. Those seasons are still open.
Federal regulators list bull, lemon, nurse, silky, spinner, tiger and sandbar sharks as large coastal sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.
