Colorful balloon release honored teen killed in freak accident
LIVONIA - A crowd of people showed up Monday night for a balloon launch to honor a teenager who died in a freak train accident over the weekend.
Brandt Torres, 17, was killed when he was hit by a train nearly two years to the day of him surviving a hunting accident where he was shot in the head. Torres was hit by the train early Sunday morning while putting coins on the tracks along Highway 70 between Maringouin and Livonia.
Outside of Livonia High Monday evening, numerous balloons of various colors were released into the sky painting a rainbow glow against the dark night sky. It was a way to memorialize Torres, who had captured the hearts of most everyone in town after he survived the accidental shooting.
