Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month at Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake
BATON ROUGE - The month of March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month at Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. During this time doctors are really pushing people to get screened for cancer.
"Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Louisiana," Dr. Louis Barfield told 2une in. "But the good news, it's very preventable and treatable if caught in the earliest stages."
The Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center offers a free take-home kit that people can take home and send back to the hospital to be tested for Colorectal cancer.
"Everyone needs to be screened at least at age 50," Dr. Barfield told Kylie Dixon this morning. He also suggested that people who have a family history of Colorectal cancer, should be screened about 10 years before they turn 50.
Throughout March, employees of the Cancer Center will be handing out the take-home kits throughout the community for no cost.
