Yesterday came very close to setting the record for the coldest Mardi Gras of all-time, while the day itself fell much later than usual! New Orleans recorded an official high temperature of 41° just prior to midnight but most of the daylight hours were spent in the upper 30s. Should the temperature have stuck in the 30s or fallen at night like it typically does, the record would have been broken. However, February 14, 1899 never made it beyond 38° and still holds its place as the most chilling carnival on record. That year also saw a low of 22° and as much as 3" of snow had to be cleared from the ground before the Krewe of Rex hit the streets!
