BATON ROUGE - Despite gun violence having the attention of lawmakers following two high-profile weekend killings, the conversation at the capitol is not about restricting gun rights.

"Laws that restrict possession of firearms only do so for the law abiding," Central republican House of Representatives member Barry Ivey said. There are numerous proposals up for discussion during the 2016 regular session but few deal with restrictions.

New Orleans-are lawmaker and House democrat John Bagneris argues safety is a priority.

"This is a safety thing, it's not about keeping your guns away from you," he said.

"Louisiana has some very liberal gun laws and we keep stripping off restrictions from the Second Amendment that limits where you can have a gun and who can carry a gun," Rep. Terry Landry (D- New Iberia) said.

Many gun proposals are up for debate this week.
