VENICE, La.  - The Coast Guard says a coal freighter has run aground near the mouth of the Mississippi River and a tug has been dispatched to free it.

The Coast Guard says the 738-foot-long Panamanian-flagged ship ran aground Tuesday morning on its way to the Gulf of Mexico, but the grounding was not impeding river traffic.

The Coast Guard says there were no reports of injuries or pollution.

The grounding took place near Venice, south of New Orleans.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Bill Colclough said a tug boat had been sent to free the vessel and that Coast Guard personnel were on the scene. He said the ship would be inspected once it is freed.
