NASA says the Deep Impact spacecraft braved a cosmic ice storm during a flight past the comet Hartley 2 earlier this month.

New findings show the comet was surrounded by chunks of ice ranging from the size of golf balls to basketballs.

The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasedena says it appears Deep Impact was hit nine times by ice paritcles but none large enough to do damage.

The mission was the fifth time a comet has been viewed up close.
