CLINTON – The town of Clinton was one of the first areas hit by the recent historic flooding. Now residents are beginning the process of gutting their homes.

Sheilla Flowers has lived in her Clinton neighborhood for nearly five decades. Her home base is now a ghost town with pile of debris lining the roads.

"August the 12th, I'll never forget it," Flowers said.

Flowers evacuated within hours, but came back to her neighborhood and saved nearly 30 people.

"At that time I wasn't thinking and I was going back out in the boat and the gentleman in the boat said "Duck for the power line!" and I'm like "Power line?" and it actually hit me, that was the moment I realized how high I was in the boat," Flowers said.

Flowers is focusing on getting her and her family's homes back to living condition.

However, nearly a month later, residents want to know when the town will start debris pick-up. Flowers says that neighbors are experiencing health problems caused by black mold and fly infested piles. Clinton Mayor Laurie Anne Bell said that the town will contract a debris clean up company. Bell says that her office will know more about the start date in the next two days.

Despite the loss, Flowers remembers the big picture and for her that is family.

"All your hard work and time you put into building a home, look at what's going on with it now," Flowers said.

"But thank God we still have our lives, we didn't lose a life," Flowers said.

Flowers said that her family remains in the Red Cross shelter in town and displaced in different states, but she hopes to have her neighborhood and home back by Christmas.
