UPDATE: People evacuated from their homes after a chemical in North Baton Rouge are now allowed to return home.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department was called to the Kelly Trace Apartments at 999 Rosenwald just before 3 a.m., after residents reported a foul smell in the area.
Firefighters found that a drum of Hydrogen Peroxide was leaking at a waste water treatment site behind the complex, and evacuated eight units as a precaution while the Haz Mat team was called in.
The spill created a vapor cloud with a foul odor, which firefighters tried to keep down by spraying water on it. The leak was stopped around 7 a.m. and a cleanup company was called in; they finished their work just after noon.
