BATON ROUGE - Istrouma Baptist Church is heading up an initiative to help kids stay off the streets by playing sports.

Sunday, kids had the chance to go to five different locations in the city to choose from a number of free sporting supplies as well as get mentored by college athletes.

"I know some kids don't have that type of big sister, big brother type in their life," said Tia Patterson, a college softball player for Baton Rouge Community College. "So when we come out, we can make a difference in their day."

The church teamed up with 12 other churches in the area hoping to reach more than 1,000 kids.

"The Baton Rouge Sports Initiative is a movement of God through the hearts of people using sports as a bridge to transform the community with the gospel of Jesus Christ," said M.L. Woodruff, from Istrouma Baptist Church.

The church accepts donations of gently used baseball bats, footballs, basketballs and other sporting items to hold for kids interested in the program.
