Child shot by 4-year-old expected to recover
ST. AMANT - A 12-year-old boy is recovering after sheriff's deputies in Ascension Parish say he was accidentally shot by a younger child.
Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said a four-year-old boy was handling a loaded .22 rifle he found in a closet when the shooting happened around 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
Bacala said deputies were called out to the residence on Fontenot Rd. where both of the children were visiting. According to the adults at the house, the 12-year-old was playing a video game when he was shot in the lower back.
The child was taken to an area hospital for surgery. According to Bacala, family members have indicated that they expect the boy to make a full recovery.
