BATON ROUGE - The Department of Education this week revoked the license of a Baton Rouge day care center, ending public funding for it based on recent inspections that turned up dozens of violations of state law.

Our Blessings Christian Daycare Learning Center, located at 9835 Old Hammond Hwy in Baton Rouge, was issued the revocation letter on Wednesday.

"We take the welfare of Louisiana's youngest citizens very seriously," said State Superintendent John White. "We're not going to allow unsafe child care centers to operate in this state. If an early learning center has disregard for the state's laws and regulations, we're going to revoke its license."

The daycare center was inspected in June of this year after the Department of Education received a complaint that child care employees left a child at a Baton Rouge restaurant during a field trip back in May.

Inspectors cited the daycare for not notifying the child's parents or the department of the incident, not having parental permission slips for the field trip and not having a state-qualified director on staff.

A similar inspection of a Bossier City daycare in May also determined it was unsafe for young children and led to the citation of 30 deficiencies including the failure to perform background checks for all employees.

Both centers are now ineligible for public funding through the Child Care Assistance Program, which makes child care more affordable for low-income families. Parents will be referred to other licensed facilities. After receiving the revocation letter, the day cares have 15 days to appeal the department's decision, and are allowed to remain open and operate without a license until the 15 days expire.

The center's Facebook page was still active as of Friday, but their website was down. To learn more about day care center licensing in Louisiana, visit the Department of Education's website.
