HOUMA - A police chief called the 130-pound pit bull that killed a Houma 4-year-old a "monster", and said counselors were working with police who responded to the scene and fatally shot the dog.

Houme Police Chief Todd Duplantis told WWL-TV the scene at the apartment complex where Mia Derouen and her mother were attacked Tuesday evening was "horrific." The chief said Derouen suffered facial and head injuries in the attack before her mother, Megan Touchet, was able to get her away and call for help.

"The mother was able to get away from the pit bull and barricade herself in a bedroom where she screamed for help and handed over her 4-year-old child through a window to medical personnel," Duplantis said.

The child was taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. Officers said Touchet also suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized as well.

Duplantis said officers shot the dog, named Niko, three times before they tried to enter the apartment because it was running loose and "acting in a very vicious manner." He said the dog charged the officers who were going into the apartment, and was shot an additional 10 times before it died.

Police said animal control officers removed a second pit bull from the home without incident, and that it was not involved in the attack.

The death and attack remains under investigation.
