BATON ROUGE- A local restaurant is celebrating a milestone anniversary this weekend. Chicken Shack has been a staple in the Baton Rouge community for 80 years.

The restaurant has been a family-run business since its very first day in operation back in 1935. That's when New Orleans native, Tommy Delpit, introduced Baton Rouge to his signature "knuckle suckin' good chicken." Tommy and his wife kept the business running with the help of their only son, Joe.

Joe Delpit says he's no stranger to hard work. He originally started working as a dishwasher at the restaurant. He eventually took over the business from his father when he was 18-years-old.

Joe says he picked up a few tips from his dad over the years.

"Most of the other commercial fried chicken places use a dry batter, but we use a wet batter," said Delpit. "Dad probably brought that down from New Orleans when he came."

Now, some of Joe's children and grandchildren are following the family tradition. Today, they're not only keeping the Chicken Shack alive, but helping it grow. The restaurant has more than 80 employees and just opened up their sixth restaurant.

Joe says all of his children grew up learning the value of hard work, education, and giving back to the community. But you don't have to be a Delpit to be a part of the chicken family. Joe makes it a priority to hire college students.
