BATON ROUGE- A man from the New Orleans area will likely face charges after he crashed into University Lake near the LSU campus Tuesday evening.
Sheriff's deputies from West Baton Rouge said the man crashed during a chase that began at a truck stop casino on the western side of the Mississippi River.
A department spokesperson said Stephen Chilton was seen running from the casino and driving away quickly while running multiple stop signs. A West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop him, but Chilton kept driving.
Eventually, Chilton crashed into the lake in Baton Rouge deputies said. The chase covered around ten miles of highway.
A West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy jumped into the water with witnesses and pulled Chilton out of the vehicle, which had overturned.
"I just knew officers would have a hard time if the guy got out, so I wanted to do what I could to help them," Jacob Nici told WBRZ News 2 in an exclusive interview.
Chilton was reported missing by family members in Jefferson Parish earlier Tuesday. He was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation and will likely be booked into jail when he is released.
