BATON ROUGE- 'Tis the season to give and during this time of year thousands of people turn to charities for help. Some try to take advantage of the generosity that goes with the season.

In Baton Rouge, some charities have a system in place to check for abuse.

The Salvation Army along with other charities like Saint Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities work together to make sure people aren't being greedy. It's as simple as calling each other to see if a person requesting assistance is already receiving it.

"We can assure the public that every family we assist in this fashion have applied and been verified as being truly in need. Not greed but truly in need," said Major Stephen Long.

The Salvation Army is assisting more than 1,500 families for Christmas and with that many people in need they say it can be difficult to screen everyone.

The Salvation Army is looking at ways to improve how it checks if people are abusing the charity's help.
