BATON ROUGE - The Family and Youth Service Center has helped nearly 1,500 families since the beginning of the school year.

It's an all-encompassing facility that offers programs for the whole home to help curb truancy and save students from ending up on the streets.

"This center is here to address the needs of the child, which means we also address the needs of the family," said Roxson Welch, the facility director.

The center gives students outlets for almost any problem they may face, including housing the BRAVE initiative, which already targets violent teens.

"They will be assessed to locate the root problem, once we locate that root problem, regardless if it's illiteracy, poverty, discipline in their lives, substance abuse, then we will refer them to the appropriate service provider," said Herbert Anny with BRAVE.

While the programs offer help for students, ideally, leaders would like to see the center disappear, stopping truancy in its tracks.

"I want to be preventative, I want to keep a child from stumbling, and what a schools role is from keeping a child from stumbling, is to look at better ways to engage students, better ways to meet students needs," said Dr. Bernard Taylor, East Baton Rouge Schools Superintendent.

The center is located on Government Street near I-110.
