Cell phone texting scam could cost you

BATON ROUGE- A new texting scam could be costing you big bucks and you may not even know it.

The texting scam works by auto-dialing random numbers and sending them things like trivia or ringtones, without asking permission and then charging your cell phone bill.

Cell carriers are obligated to pay the third-party charges, but you can get them reversed if you contact your provider.

"If it shows up on your bill, we'll take it off your bill and we'll certainly investigate it," said Sue Sperry with AT&T.

The companies are often off-shore and hard to find, but AT&T says if they can pinpoint a number they can stop the charges.

"We usually advise customers, unwanted texts, don't respond to them, delete them, but in this case, they're getting charged unless they stop," said Sperry.

To prevent future charges you can ask your carrier for a 'purchase blocker.'

"There's no charge for it, and that will prevent any charges coming from third parties to hit your cell," said Sperry.
