Cause of widespread outage being investigated
BATON ROUGE - An Entergy spokesperson said they're looking into what caused an equipment failure that plunged thousands of homes into darkness last night.
Catherine Ward with Entergy said an auto transformer at the Willow Glen switchyard failed, which left about 19,000 in Ascension Parish and 2,800 in East Baton Rouge Parish without power for several hours.
Ward said the outage was so widespread was because it was a critical switchyard transformer that failed, instead of a smaller transformer which only covered a few streets.
Ward said they were still investigating what caused the switchyard transformer to fail in the first place.
